Minding Mindfulness

What exactly is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is about paying attention to what's happening right now, without worrying about the future or considering the past. Mindfulness is about stilling your mind.

These waterlilies in a Seattle waterside park created a contemplative spot stopping several strollers to appreciate quietly.

Mindfulness can boost physical and emotional wellbeing.

Mindfulness can take the edge off from consistent negative thought patterns. Wondering what you're going to have for dinner, although you might be watching TV? Reliving what you should have said, although the moment has gone? Why waste the present when it can't be changed? Instead, find closure in doing something positive which in turn should make you feel positive in the present and future. Imagine how dysfunctional you would feel if you never rested your body. If quiet, sitting meditation is not your speed, there is always the option to silence the mind with attentive movement. Consider the focus one attains while rock climbing.

There seems to be growing evidence that awareness helps foster learning, decision making, emotional intelligence, self-confidence, and more fulfilling connections with others.

Concentrate on nothing for a minute.

Try a single minute of focussing on your breath. Or concentrate on what's around you. For instance, focus on present sights, sounds, and smells. You may be mindful anytime, anywhere and with anything. For example, you can clear your mind while eating, walking, skating, listening to audio, or driving.

Give a kid some coping skills.

Young children may have an advantage in being mindful because every experience is thrilling and fresh to keep them present in the moment. To encourage kids to practice mindfulness, try drawing or some other artistic activity that focusses their concentration on an action rather than a thought. Walking through nature with the family may get your kid intrigued in exploring the beauty of nature. By exposing them to mindfulness methods at an earlier age, the ability exposes them to techniques which can regulate stress levels in work, study, and play through to adulthood.

I picked up the audiobook version and it validated my opinion.
